Who Asked for "Peelable" Candy?
I sure didn't, but I'm glad it exists.

To those who say weird candy peaked in the '90s, let me tell you about Peelerz. This strange creation makes a hard sugar stick dipped in more sugar look like the most boring candy imaginable.
Peelerz is exactly what it sounds like: peelable candy. I first heard about it during an episode of Good Mythical Morning, which is a show I religiously watch every day with my wife. Rhett and Link were fascinated by the concept, so I knew I needed to try them. Sadly, it took me a while to actually find Peelers in a store. But I finally got some.

Here's the pitch: Imagine a big Gusher, but instead of being filled with juice, it's filled with a semi-solid, gelatinous goop. And you're encouraged to peel back the gummy outer coating, for some reason.
As Rhett and Link discovered, calling Peelerz "peelable" is being generous. Sure, you can rip open the gummy shell to reveal the filling, but under no circumstances would I consider this "peeling." I was only able to keep the inside somewhat enact by precisely performing surgery with a knife. Using my fingers to "peel" felt like I was doing something I wouldn't want anyone to see. Like biting the chocolate off the outside of a KitKat.

Here's the thing, though. Peelerz are amazing. If you forget the gimmick and just eat them straight up, they're awesome. It really is like a big Gusher with fruit inside. The gummy texture is great, and the Banana flavor is exactly what I want from Banana candy. Even without peeling, they're super fun to eat, too. A soft, gummy pillow that bursts with fruit flavor.
Peelerz come in a bunch of flavors and I really want to try the other ones. Mango, Kiwi, Orange, and Pineapple all sound amazing. I also have to admit that the marketing got me. Would I have cared to try these without the peelable nonsense? Probably not. I'm glad I did, though. Weird candy lives on.
